History
Soyuz-ST is a three-stage carrier rocket equipped with an additional restartable Fregat upper stage, which allows lifting payloads into higher orbits, including high circular, elliptical, sun synchronous, geotransfer, geostationary orbits and departure trajectories. The upper stage may be considered a fourthstage of the rocket, but its flight control and telemetry systems are fully independent from the rocket. The upper stage and a spacecraft are mounted under the large ST fairing, similar to the one used on theAriane 4 launch vehicle.Soyuz-ST is intended for commercial launches. The flights are contracted by Starsem, and are currentlylaunched from LC-31 at Baikonur. These will move to a new new ELS (l'Ensemble de Lancement Soyouz) launch site, which is currently being built at the Guiana Space Centre on the northern coast of South America. The Soyuz-STis expected to deliver up to 3.2 tonnes to GTO from the ELS site. The first launch is expected in 2009. Anothername for the ELS configuration is Soyuz-STK, where additional "K" indicates special measures taken for preparingand launching the rocket in hot and humid conditions. The first attempt at launching a Soyuz-ST to orbit, with the MetOp-A satellite, occurred on 17 July 2006.
