What to understand: I’m not providing this for the textures. My intent is to provide a high resolution model that is hopefully one of the last literature or school style books you’ll ever need… (me too).
Mapping: Each book has four total mapping IDs. There is one for the cover, spine and the back cover. ID #1 is a checkerboard material used to control the color (just make both color slots the same color and that becomes the books’ main color. You can also use your own bitmap of course to add old or worn looks. The other three IDs are designed to work with 32bit RGBA tiffs (or other alpha-capable format) as labels or decals for the cover, spine and back. Or you can map it all yourself. These books were designed to be 100% customizable in 3DS Max 9 both for material usage and manipulation of the model.
Finishes: The finish of each book in controlled by an Arch &Design shader with a to-scale leather bump map applied. You can use the three main types of finishes: Matte, Pearl or Glossy, and tweak from there. You can scale the size of the book. If you do, be sure to apply the world space modifier for textures so the bump map is always accurate in relation to the book.
Bitmaps: All bitmaps are included so you can see the bitmaps used for the labeling, or you can ignore all the mapping IDs and simply throw a bitmap on them with your own planar mapping. The bitmaps were designed to fit each individual book, so that should help you create labels and textures that won’t end up stretching. Either way, you’ll have an excellent model to enhance any serious visualization or close up dynamic shots where low-poly meshes simply crumble.
